Re: What is the value of a 1902c (Carbine) rear si
The 1902C sight is one of the scarcer varities, in fact strictly speaking in terms of numbers produced, it is probably THE scarcest Krag sight. But, I also believe its demand is limited, since it would only be "correct" on a VERY few arms.

In value, I'd guess it would possibly r...

Re: New to the Kraq
I'll try to help with some beginning info, but it will not be complete:

(1) There was no model specific to the USMC. In fact, I was not aware that they did use the Krag - I'd have thought it would have been one of the Lees, like the Navy? I hasten to say that I likewise have no info that ...

Re: Help is appreciated
Yes, for some reason, carbines seem to be quite a bit more desirable than rifles. Fewer carbines were made, making them numerically scarcer. A "band" front sight is where the sight is mounted to a ring of metal which slips onto the barrel. NO Krag was originally made with such a sight. ANY...

Re: Help is appreciated
First off, it is Krag, NOT "Craig". :-)

$500 is cheap, IF it is in unaltered military condition, but, TOO MUCH if bubba has been at it. Serial number? Barrel length? Markings? You can see some genuine examples at www.picturetrail.com/sa4570af

Study them VERY carefully...

Re: 1896 short stocks and cartouches
Bandit,

Your understanding is correct. And, I believe you will find that the cartouche really is dated 1898. Is this not the "1898 Carbine" you have been asking about? If you have a serial number in a believable range (111000 - 139000) and everything else is right, you COULD hav...

Re: model 1896
If complete and correct, it would probably be worth (in Northern CA) somewhere between $750 and $1500, depending on how "worn" it really is - such terms can be very subjective.

Re: Another Newbie to the world of Krags
The added peep sight is not something that was done at SA. Depending on the type, you MAY be able to remove it without leaving any tracks. The marks on the wood are most likely regimental or unit ID markings. They are common on .45-70 trapdoors of the SAW period, but rather unusual on a Krag. They s...

Re: question about 1898 springfield
You need a Model 1898 rifle stock, with "JSA/1898" inspection stamp. Expect to pay $300-400 plus, or so, WHEN you find one. There are probably hundreds of people in your shoes, as MANY Krags were "sporterized", and loose stocks are hard to find.

The 1896 rear sight sho...

Re: Identifying Krag carbine fakes
If you are talking, as I believe you are, about a carbine with a short stock, the wood itself is almost certainly genuine, as the short grasping grooves would be nearly impossible for bubba to fake. Then you must compare the front sight to a genuine example. A visit to SRS will give you some idea of...

Re: New to Krags
Yes, barrels ARE (or at least until recently were) available through Numrich Arms. I do not know who actually makes them. However, there were MANY stories of poor quality, most involving bad "indexing", meaning that the extractor cut and sight preps were out of line.

Perhaps the...
