The front sight mounting appears to be one that was offered by Stokes-Kirk back in the day ... similar to, but not the same as, the fixed and moveable bases from the M1903 Springfield that were often used on shortened rifles.

It took me YEARS to find a Norwegian Krag with a decent barrel, and my patience finally paid off: it is more than "decent", it's excellent.<br /><br />Rebarreling is your best option if you want to hit what you shoot at with<u> that </u>rifle. Just remind the gunsmith that Norwegien barrel...
