I've seen it discussed many times with no real resolution?
Here was a go at it years ago...

Re: receivers
Welcome, Dave! Congratulations on a fine choice for your rifle projects. Too bad you didnt engage this forum sooner it sounds like you have amassed a particular kit of parts already. So a crash course will do? 1. Restoring will seldom alter the finishes other than removing dirt, grime, rust, etc. wh...

Re: Krag Use in WWII
In light of recent posts, I thought I would bring this one back to the front of the line.

Re: Rear sight for 99 carbine
Just edited my last post - my memory mixed-up the two sights. Glanced at the Poyer book yesterday. The 1902 sights were used to replace the older 1896/1898 sights on the earliest 1899's. Still leaves the ones made in 1900 in the middle.

Re: Rear sight for 99 carbine
I am currently restoring two 1899 carbines - one was made in 1899 and one was made in 1901. From my studies, I have determined that the 1901 sight is "most correct" on the the 1899/1901 and the 1902 sight was "most correct" on the 1899/1899. Since an 1899/1900 is between those tw...

Re: Restoration?
Krag collecting to me, when it comes to the 'needing-help' variety, has much to do with the resdistributing of parts based upon individual character or originality - but i was hooked decades ago. "Inheriting" can be a big word that inbibes a collectable with much more than anyone else coul...

Re: Heavy trigger pull
Start with the spring. Many have been replaced with heavy-duty custom ones over the years.

Re: Lower band and ejection issues
Ejectors can get bent out of shape. I've encountered over-bent ones which likely got poked by a cleaning rod from the muzzle end - some so much that you can feel the drag on the bolt. I've had others that had been slightly flattened which must have been intentional. The best thing to do is to compar...

Re: Choosing brass for the .30-40 Krag
I prefer the Winchester Brass. I'm not sure if is real or perceived however. The Winchester alloy seems to hold up better, the vent holes seem to be more consistent and the annealing seems to be more consistent (less splitting). I do use both however because the Remington has been more readily avail...

Why the Model 1899 Receivers?
There is no difference between a Model 1898 receiver and a Model 1899 receiver besides the one number. Why did they go through the bother? Was there government policy enacted in 1898/1899 that stopped development of the Model 1898 so that a new model designation was required to allow for additional ...
