Re: Cracked Stock

All well and good (except maybe the part about inserting a metal screw), but it will detract from the originality of the stock. While wood screws are a time honored repair, the fact that there will be a wood plug hiding it can (and usually is) as unsightly as a naked screw head. I know that my eye w...

Re: dry stock

I'll add that pure tung oil is a viable alternative, and will dry a lot faster than raw linseed oil. You can't tell the difference between tung and linseed oil in the finished product, both in terms of looks and prevention of moisture fenestration. (But it has to be the pure stuff, not the tung oil ...

Amoskeag auction

It was brought to my attention that some of Mark Benenson's Krag collection is coming up in a March auction at Amoskeag. Mark collected primarily custom Krags which may or may not interest some people, but I know he was also a sucker for pristine originals too. Regardless, he demanded quality and hi...

Re: bore cleaning

Or if you're really adventurous (or dumb, like me) you can do the old ammonia trick. I filled the bore of a highly fouled '03 barrel with stronger ammonia- the real McCoy, not sold over the counter- and plugged it to sit a while. (A technique I had read about in a Phil Sharpe book, I believe.) Inste...

Re: getting 1892 krag rebarreled

Sorry to hear of the travails a New Yorker must endure over such matters. And I thought Maryland was bad...

Thinking some more about it, the biggest stumbling block, IMO, is having/using a proper action wrench. The Krag receiver is particularly prone to damage if gerry rigged methods are ...

Re: getting 1892 krag rebarreled

Why not ship it? Small risk in order to put it in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. Smiths with the proper action wrench are few and far between- not much call for Krag rebarreling anymore. Personally I would just send it to the CMP and be done with it, especially if the new barrel ...

Re: Should I bite??

All those big box sporting goods stores employ people in the gun departments, of whom 90% are ignorant of their job/don't care/don't want to learn/should work at WalMart in the household department. When perusing the used racks it's best to keep an open mind and answer your own questions. IMO the be...

Re: Nice shooting weather for pre-Krag

That is a dandy! Swamped barrel? What powder charge?

I shoot 60grains FFFg in mine, and prime with FFFFg. I have some small flints I won't be using. If you wish, I can send them along, gratis. (I'll be out 'til Sunday, so don't panic if I don't get back to you right away.)
