Re: Krag Book Recommendation-Brophy or Mallory/Ols
Rutger's Book Center still has some new copies of Brophy's book. I believe they are up to $150. Photos are great and clear, but don't know that I would want to spend that much. You do find used copies at shows cheaper.

I ran into a friend the other day who just got a copy of Poyer's and ...

Re: New krag question
Sure sounds like some sort of receiver sight set up. Some require wood to be cut, some don't. Addition of receiver sights is not at all uncommon on sporterized guns. What type of sight is on it now? What model and serial number? What barrel length? Many of these sporterized gun were cut to carbine l...

Re: a little help with my first Krag please?
I agree. Your rifle is quite late and most definitely had a 30" rifle barrel. In the early 1900's the government sold surplus rifles to the sporting market through the NRA. Carbines were quite popular and when supplies of carbines ran out, they converted rifles to carbine lengths. Surplus deale...

Re: New reader to this site
The 1894 is a model 1892 rifle. It sounds as though it was cut down, or sporterized. Carbines had 22" barrels, Board of Ordnance & Fortifications (only 100) had 26" and rifles 30". Only a couple of 1892 made as carbines as models, and it sounds as though they are accounted for.<br...

Re: Krag single shot carbine?
Never heard of one. The Mallory/Olson book makes reference to, and shows a photo of one that was converted to single shot. Also, could it be a single shot of another make, chambered for the 30-40 Krag cartridge? Have you seen the gun, or only heard of it?

Re: WTB 1899 Krag receiver
Have you tried the old "Numerich Arms"? I know they had some '98 receivers a while ago. There may be a '99 in the mix.
Their web site is e-GunParts.com and their email address is info@gunpartscorp.com
If I come across one, I'll let you know.
Good luck.

Re: Krag rifle to Krag carbine?
Altering an original rifle to carbine configuration shouldn't be a consideration. I agree with parashooter. Look for a sporterized Krag that has already been butchered. You have to decide what period you're interested in reenacting. Early 1900's long forearm carbine can probably be configured from a...

Looks as though no one has responded. Do you still have the sight? If so, are you looking to sell it, or trade it for something?

Re: 1896 Krag
That serial number, unfortunately, isn't listed in the book. It does fall in the range of '96 rifles. No carbines listed anywhere near that number. The rifles originally had 30" barrels. Yours must have been cut. The U.S. carbines had 22" barrels. The stocks on all were straight through th...

Re: 1896 Krag
Mike,
There seems to be some confusion. The rifle you described isn't a Norwegian Krag. It is a U.S. Rifle, Model 1896, Caliber 30-40, Made at the U.S. arsenal in Springfield, Mass. From the serial number range you gave, it was made in 1897, and may have seen service during the Spanish American W...
