Re: Recommendatons for reloading 180 grain sp for Krag

Ed, others have advised not to push the old Krag too hard & they are right. Your load of 44.3 grains of 4320 seems more than a bit too much for me and I would not use that load in a Krag. I messed about with 4350 and 4831 and 220 grain bullets and wound up cracking a bolt lug.

Most o...

Re: Buying Krags in the 1900's

One place or another, Ned Roberts wrote about having one before 1900, obtained through the influence of his congressman.

Re: Sedgley Krag 1898

If you have not hand-loaded for the Krag before, just a bit of advice. It is not necessary to duplicate the original loads. The newest of these rifles is over 100 years old and there is nothing to be gained from squeezing the highest possible velocity from them.

You might read (at least ...

Re: Sedgley Krag 1898

If you read some of the old books, particularly Fred Ness' "Practical Dope for the Big Bores", you get the impression that there were Sedgleys and then there were Sedgleys. Some were just put together from surplus parts. Others were extensively modified, apparently including re-heat treati...

Re: Father and Pretty Boy Floyd

Good story. Is that about the last real use of a posse to round up the bad guys?

But per your question about the value of the Krags, here is my view: The value of the Krags is greater to your family (& future generations thereof) than to almost anyone else. IMHO, the rifles are far b...

Re: Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle

The extractor plate is supposed to snap back into position when the regular Krag extractor (on the bolt) hits the trip pin on the left side of the action.

I have never had this one apart. I have seen a drawing (Brophy?). It looks as if it might be just a parts replacement job, but you wou...

Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle

Is there any interest on this Forum in the history & minutiae of the Model 1898 Gallery Practice Rifle and its predecessors? I have been shooting one for the last 18 months but have never encountered another. I have learned a bit about them, if anyone is interested, but they are very different f...

Hello fellow Krag enthusiasts

I just joined this forum. I have 2 Krags; an 1896, probably a Bannerman sporter with a WW1 surplus Springfield barrel; and a DCM carbine altered from an 1898 rifle by Benecia Arsenal.

Also I am caretaker of a Model 1898 Gallery practice Rifle, spo...

Re: Is this a special model of 1898 KRAG rifle?

I am new on this forum. If it is a cut-down "GI" Krag rifle stock, the lightening cuts should be readily visible when you take the barreled action out of the stock.
