My First Springfield Trapdoor!

I picked up my first trapdoor yesterday because I was looking for the rifle Marines would’ve carried and used before they converted over to 1898 Krags. WHIG suggested that I post pictures and my questions on this forum because many Krag collectors have knowledge and information on the Springfield tr...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

I’ve been traveling for the past week and a half and I finally got to where I could put a little bit more attention into this amazing (to me) Krag. when I finally got around to prying open the plate on the butt stock look what fits very snuggly! They weren’t rattling around so I wasn’t aware of thei...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Speaking of “time tunnels”, here’s one on this amazing Krag that keeps giving me surprises! I finally got to where I could punch a cotton cloth thru the bore and wipe down the chamber, and I’m so happy to see that it is bright and shiny, with no pitting, and has sharp lands and grooves the length of...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Wow Butlersrangers. Great eyes! I didn’t even see what now looks to me to be a prior box cartouche underneath the JFC box cartouche until you pointed it out. It even looks like it may have been a script JSA cartouche. The mystery deepens now as to why JF Coyle would have put his cartouche over the t...

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

I got a chance to wipe the stock down with a cotton cloth and realized that what looked like brass pens near the P circle cartouche behind the trigger guard aren’t. The wood grain on this stock is absolutely beautiful!!!

Re: J.F.C. Stock Cartouche on 1898 Krag Rifle?

Thank you All. I didn’t even notice the little brass pins in the wrist of the stock and I’ll take a closer look at that. I’ve never taken an Krag out of its stock and that’s gonna be an adventure. I forgot to mention that the Bore looks really good as well. I can see sharp lands and grooves. Does an...
