Re: Need a picture of a handguard spring clip. Attached or unattached to the handguard.
How did you expand the base of the nail to make it tight? Just out of curiosity, what material did they use for the original rivets? Copper? Brass? Steel? Original rivets look like (mild) steel to me. To expand the small end of the mild steel cut-down nail inside the handguard I fixed a flat-ended ...

That would be tough to expand without cracking the wood. I may go with copper or brass.

Re: Need a picture of a handguard spring clip. Attached or unattached to the handguard.
Didn't save an interior photo, but here's the outside of a handguard I made from scratch a few years ago. The clips were easily fabricated from steel packing bands, riveted with cut-down common nails. Wasn't terribly difficult and it held securely. KragHandguard.jpg How did you expand the base of t...

Re: Need a picture of a handguard spring clip. Attached or unattached to the handguard.
My understanding is the rear sight needs to come off to attach the handguard. Is that correct?

WOW. That was fast and incredibly helpful.
I'm not sure what to use for the band. I have some stainless steel shim stock I could probably use. How thick is the steel on the clips?

My de-sporterized carbine
In a previous post I attached photos of a sporterized 1896 Krag carbine I bought. You can go back a few topics and see those pics. I've finally finished everything I want to do and want to share the "after" pictures with you. The most difficult part was shortening and hand inletting the ha...

Need a picture of a handguard spring clip. Attached or unattached to the handguard.
I've finished de-sporterizing my carbine and all I have left to do is attach a spring clip to my handguard. I've looked around, but can't find any clips available, so it looks like I'll have to fabricate my own. It would be really helpful if I could see a photograph of one, so I can see how far arou...

Re: Makeover: De-sportered my 1896 carbine
Your stock looks a lot better with the rubber & swivels gone and a 1903 Springfield butt-plate fitted to the shortened butt-stock. Thank you. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am with how it turned out. Shortening and inletting the handguard was definitely the toughest part. It didn't help ...

Makeover: De-sportered my 1896 carbine
Even though some said "It's a nice sporter, leave it alone." a sporter wasn't what I wanted. I picked this sporter up gun up few weeks a go and after a few prayers went to work. I removed the rubber recoil pad, stripped off the shiny lacquer finish and removed the sling swivels. It was a c...

Re: I'm confused about what I have here.
Things are actually coming along pretty well. The butt plate I got does a good job once I took the curve out it and made it a flat plate. It just so happened a friend of mine had a hand guard he bought and wasn't using because it didn't work with his 1898 rifle (cut down to a carbine) because he has...
