Re: 1898 carbine

<r>John Hunter: IMHO - If your Krag has a nice bore, it is easily worth $500 just for parts and 'shooter' value. (The 1899 carbine stock with 1898/1902 hand-guard are worth about $350-400).<br /><br />I think the front-sight base was nicely done and is ethical in that it is obviously wrong and shoul...

Re: 1898 carbine

<r>John: Thanks for posting pictures. The model 1898 Krag carbine is always suspect because only about 5,000 were made by Springfield. Many fakes have been made.<br /><br />Your receiver, #1186XX, is in a range of numbers that was used for both model 1898 carbines and rifles. Your stock is the 1899 ...

Re: 1898 carbine

John - Your stock appears to be the 'long forearm' (1899 type) carbine stock. When these were used as replacement stocks, there was no need for an 'acceptance cartouche'.<br /><br />It looks to me that your front-sight base is too tall. Please compare it with the picture of a carbine front-sight, th...

Re: 1896 Krag: What have I got here??

<r>'psteinmayer' pretty much covered it. If the bore is good, your son's model 1896 Krag should be a fun shooter. It got made into a useful 'Hunting Rifle', long ago.<br /><br />It appears to be missing the Magazine Cut-Off Lever. This is an easy part to find and should cost $15-20. With a model 189...

Re: 1898 carbine

<r>'John Hunter' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. Having made a posting, you may now find it possible to post pictures.<br /><br />FWIW - All Krag barrels have the same contour, so if a rifle barrel is 'cut-off' to 22" (from muzzle to closed bolt-face), it will have the same dimensions as a real car...

Re: 1896 Springfield Carbine

<r>'emmetj' - Welcome to the KCA Forum. <br /><br />Many of us have started our Krag experience with an example that was an Infantry Rifle, 'cut-down' to carbine length, to make a useful 'Hunting Rifle'. Such Krags can have a lot of family connection and are fun to use and enjoy at the Range.<br /><...

Re: The Big Bang, before it was a theory

<r>That paper-cap powder residue was so corrosive, I did not like subjecting my early arsenal to it. I preferred whacking those rolls of caps with my Dad's Claw-Hammer, between houses in our driveway (better acoustics)!<br /><br />Our Moms were swell. They always got us the most authentic toy guns, ...

The Big Bang, before it was a theory

<r>When I was a kid, (long before fireworks became legal in my 'Home State'), a sure sign of boredom and 'Summer Ending' was the residue of black soot and charred red paper on the sidewalks. <br /><br />I can still hear the loud bang and smell the aroma of pure percussion. <br /><br />Mind you don't...
