Re: Parts Identificaton
That lever is the magazine cutoff. It will prevent the carrier from feeding cartridges, holding the magazine in reserve. In that setting, the rifle is fired as a single shot, loading cartridges individually. A flip of the lever allows the rifle to be fired as a repeater with each cycle of the bolt.

Re: What do I have?
Ken,
A Stokes Kirk gun isn't real bad, but it's definitely not as good as an unmessed with straight military carbine. The barrel should be 21 1/4" from the muzzle to the very front edge of the receiver. The stock could be correct. Lack of markings don't necessarily mean it was restocked. It ...

Re: What do I have?
Ken,
I just realized that I didn't mention the sling swivels. They are not a good sign. Might just be a sporting accessory added to a carbine, or an indicator that rifle parts were used to assemble this. If you haven't already, go to the home page and click on "Photos". The guys from th...

Re: What do I have?
Ken,
I see no one has responded, so I'll give it a shot, with what I might know. Stokes Kirk was an old time military goods/surplus dealer similar to Francis Bannerman. He was at one time on 10th St. in Philadelphia. Both "The Krag Rifle" by Brophy and "The Krag Rifle Story" b...

Re: date of manufacture or model number?
The 1894 is the year your receiver was made. It's from a Model 1892 rifle. The year the gun was assembled would appear in a cartouche, below the inspector's initials, on the left side of the stock opposite the bolt handle. If your rifle has a one piece, straight butt plate and a cleaning rod in the ...

Wayne,
Thanks for your response. Any idea when you'll be published? Will keep an eye out.

Re: Krag Book Recommendation-Brophy or Mallory/Ols
If you're going to get serious about Krags, I would eventually plan to own both. I feel that they definitely supplement each other. I have an older copy of Brophy's and the photos are clearer than my second edition of Mallory/Olson. The info in them is definitely supplemental. If you can only afford...

Re: 1896 Karg Receiver Questions
Wayne,
Flayderman mentions the Model 1898, serial no. 152670 as the cutoff between antique and modern, by federal law. Does this match what your letter from ATF states?
Thanks,
Barry

Re: help with Krag history
Didn't see that serial number in Mallory's book, apparently no use or issuance info on this particular rifle know to date. You can tell if the barrel was cut with a tape. It should be 30" long. Is the stock full length, with a double strap barrel band and bayonet lug out front? Is there a clean...

Re: 1896 Karg Receiver Questions
Mark,
1896 dated receiver is antique under federal law.
