Re: Krag carbine ID

Come on guys, throtlle back a little and cut the new guy (Bob has two posts and his first Krag) a little slack. Horror stories about fights over a s/n abound - and some may be true. The fact that this has not plagued us in the Krag world is our good fortune. Not everone realizes how sensitive to a f...

Bill & Jim;

Thanks for the replies and info.

It makes sense that the USArmy would identify a need for a bandolier in the Philippines. Especially in the southern islands thru the end of fighting in 1907. When on patrol in remote areas, if you didn't carry it on your back you didn't ...

Time frame for Krag Bandoliers

I had the good fortune to put in the winning bid in the Oct Amoskeag auction on a Krag Bandolier dated "Mar 20 1907". Construction and lettering is as illustrated on pg 112 of Dorsey's US Martial Belts and Bandoliers. The bottum line lettering is weak but appears to be Rock Island Arsenal....

Re: Two questions about Krag rifle sights

Let's keep the chronology clearly in view. The 220gr RN bullet was sellected first and then the Krag was chosen as the best rifle to shoot it at the bad guys. SA designed the Krag's rifleling and sights to shoot a 220gr bullet at 2000fps mzl vel. It does that as well as any c1900 military rifle - th...

Re: Muzzle recrowning

John:

The only purpose for a crown is to recess the very last edge of the rifling and give it some protection while the rifle is traveling down life's bumpy road. That very last edge of the rifling is the last thing the bullet feels as it heads down range. If your rifle is shooting well the c...

Krag Use in WWII

Last Fall, while on vacation in NH, I met Mr Arthur Jennings who served during WWII on the Minesweeper YMS-29 (136' wooden hull, crew of 32, 561 ships in class. Google "YMS-29" for info and photos). Mr Jennings talked about mine clearing operations during the invasion of North Africa and h...

Today is the 230th anniversary of the first meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The first step that would lead us to having the greatest representative deliberative body in the history of mankind - bar none. We can love it or hate it, or praise it or curse it but we can't find a bet...

Re: Original Load?

Jim:

Page 2 to last night's posting - it was past my bedtime.

The 2000fps mzl vel number is for a 30" barreled rifle. The 22" barreled Carbine, with 8" less barrel for the bullet to accelerate down, has a lower mzl vel for the GI issue cartridge. Hence different Rifle an...

Re: Why the Krag?

For those interested in the Krag as a combat rifle, you may find a conversation on this forum back in Nov thru mid-Dec to be interesting. It is on page 6 of the archives discussing the Krag vs Spanish Mauser.

I would add two items to that discussion.

In March I had the pleasure of spen...
