Re: General questions about rifle

I have looked around on the internet and it seems that my serial number indicates that it is an 1899 Krag instead of 1898. Krags are complicated beasts with Byzantine histories. In this case, there are two things to consider. First, "Model 1898" rifles were made each year from 1898 to 190...

There you've hit on the real danger. I started with the impulse purchase of a regular ol' 1873 just to have "an example" and now I'm in the process of getting my 5th.

Re: Totally off the wall!

I wouldn’t say I have a great deal of street cred or sway, but I’d be perfectly fine with that (delighted, actually). I only made my first post to the Bulletin Board recently, but have always felt hampered when reading it due to the special character/photo limitations (and, heck, let’s be honest, mo...

Re: More Stupid Stuff

It is the internet, so when it comes to folks like Heather, it's like buying a trapdoor carbine. You always gotta watch out for the ramrod surprise.

Re: collector grade Krag advice

I agree with Whig - the auction houses are a bit intimidating as a buyer - massive buyer's premiums, and I've seen enough incorrect/mislabeled stuff that it doesn't feel 'safer' to expend the cash. As a bit of an outside-the-box suggestion, you might find one of the big-volume gunbroker sellers and ...

Re: Beautiful Unaltered 1892 Krag on GB

Noticed that one. I share the skepticism regarding the “unaltered” description of the Krag in question. I will, however, vouch that I picked up another rather rare antique piece from him that I’d been seeking and it is, as far as I can tell, entirely legitimate and in very nice condition. As always,...

Re: Pair of 1896 Long Rifles

There is no problem using this site to help review an item for sale, as we frequently advise potential new buyers to do. Where the problem arises is when someone posts questions to bring attention to an item that THEY are selling and potentially profiting from. Or, less nefarious but also an advers...

Re: 1892 Krags - discussion starter?

Yes, it worried me but I did recall a long-dead thread over on milsurps (I think) about a similar rifle, where 5madfarmers strenuously advised against “correcting” a similar late 1892 by adding the “proper” rear sight. I just couldn’t find that thread and didn’t know if the serial was late enough/if...

Re: 1892 Krags - discussion starter?

Yep, the first one was the one I had my eye on the closest. I was kind of hoping the wrist crack might keep it lower. Ah well, the (very low key) hunt continues.

1892 Krags - discussion starter?

Curious to get y’all’s thoughts on these *just ended* GB auctions. I was a little leery of a couple of things on these rifles but was considering throwing down a bid if one or the other had stayed under 2 grand. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/886640804 Terrible crack at the wrist, but it did look li...
