Re: I bet I can make you cry!
I have been away from the forum for a few days and this jumped up at me. I am a .22 guy with some experience in these. My GPR is serial number 444. Just two rifles away from your project. And mine was in pieces when acquired also. After some thought on the topic I thought I would offer up a differen...

Krags in the French Foreign Legion
I didn't know the French Foreign Legion carried US Krags in the Sahara. Well at least Gary Cooper did in Beau Geste. I had to look twice. That's no 8MM Lebel!

Re: 24 inch barrel CMP converted Model 1898?
I have that Williams booklet in my reference collection also. Thank you for highlighting Williams term,"sporterized" in print. I went looking for that term in a few older volumes. Townsend Whelen wrote of "Custom Rifle Makers" and "custom rifles" throughout his book &qu...

Arsenal Krag Sizing Die
While scrounging estate sales for the usual reloading components, I picked this out of a miscellaneous junk box. Well actually I had to buy the whole box of stuff to get this nugget. At this rate, with this 30-40 resizing die and two other tools from the arsenal reloading outfit now in my collection...

Re: 24 inch barrel CMP converted Model 1898?
Thinking about the term "sporterized" sometimes makes me grit my teeth. I like to reserve that term for higher end professionally customized hunting rifles. My father always said he preferred to think of the not so well done rifles as simply "modified". Having said that and havin...

Favorite Krag Ammo Box
Collecting Military and Commercial Krag Ammo boxes is an interesting side line to the rifles themselves. This Winchester Krag ammo box with a charging brown bear is a favorite. The same artwork shows up on other Winchester ammo boxes in other calibers of the same vintage. What is your favorite vinta...

Re: 1898 build
I agree with Butlersrangers. I have shot both model sights in CMP Vintage matches many times.

Re: Sight Questions
Renowned target shooter Dr Walter Hudson in the small book Modern Rifle Shooting from the American Standpoint, talked about the Krag on the target range. The little book was published in 1903 (Laflin and Rand Powder). He explained blackening the sight by burning a lump of Camphor. Dr Hudson says the...

Re: Sight Questions
What a great photo of the vintage Krag shooters kit. Yes the modern smoker is small and easier to use. But it does require a quick cleaning after the shooting day is done. They are a shooter "magnet" on the firing line. With a good flame going, your fellow shooters usually gather around an...
