Re: Reloading for my 1898 Krag Rifle
Hmm, the Lapua got closer than what I thought it would, must have a long bearing surface, about the same as a 183gr cast spitzer I use. Max magazine length. Check as suggested by butlersrangers, but I'm pretty sure .311 will go ok. I know that the bullets will swage down to groove diameter once the ...

Re: Something Really Interesting
That would be a good one to enter in the Cast Bullet Association's Light Sporter Class. I think a rifle has to weigh less than 9lbs to make that. Wouldn't make their Modified Military Class because they only allow original barrels. But find a Malcolm or Litschert scope and you'd be all set for the m...

Re: Reloading for my 1898 Krag Rifle
Yea, saw that. But the Krag chamber generally likes a longer nose. A 311284 with a .302 nose would be nice. Night Owl Enterprises makes a mould that casts a proper size nose. I see you got a Krag with a Douglas barrel, don't get your oversized spitzers mixed up with ammo for it.

Re: Reloading for my 1898 Krag Rifle
Keith, you mentioned that Beartooth sells some cast bullets sized larger for the .303. Largest bullet my Krag chambers will accept is .312 with RP brass and they're a tight fit. A larger bullet would require caseneck turning. .311 works ok, except in some old thicker necked Rem-UMC brass that I have...

Re: Winchester 748 ball powder?
You'd be safe reducing the .303 British start loads a tad and working up. The 30/40 and .303 are very close in capacity. Although there's no 748 data in this compilation, there is data for BLC-2, which burns at about the same rate. Start low, work up. http://theswissriflesdotcommessageboard.yuku.com...

Re: Reloading for my 1898 Krag Rifle
Don't know if the accuracy will hold up at 200yds or not Paul, though it should. The bullet probably has about the highest BC of any 30 caliber cast bullet. Should be about the equal of the Thompson 180gr bullet once used in the Krag target rifles. You can bet by next Aug I'll have a really good 200...

Re: Reloading for my 1898 Krag Rifle
<r>Likely the nose of your bullet is a bit too small, most Krag barrels have a bore diameter of .301. I have used .310 and .311 jacketed bullets in a rifle with a .310 groove diameter, they shot pretty good, better than .308 jacketed bullets.<br /><br />To get heavier lead bullets going up around 20...

Re: Acquired an 1896 Krag.
Everyone be sure to note that the data above is for the .308 Winchester. Some of the starting loads are within the Krag's pressure limit though.

Re: Poyer/Riesch "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine"
I can't say for sure because I can't find a good image, but that front sight looks like it might have come from a US Magazine Rifle, Model 1902, the long barreled predecessor of the 1903 rod bayonet model. May have been modified some.

But the Pacific receiver sight would bring $100 on ebay.
