Re: 30-40 Krag handed down from father, need info

Nice looking sporter. The more knowledgeable regulars must be on vacation. There were some name gunsmiths that did good work in days gone by and there rifles command a premium. I think real clean original rifles price below those. Nicely done sporters like yours with clean bores and no issues will b...

Re: Ringed chamber

Thanks Reincarnated for the verification on the 2400 load. I borrowed Sharpe's book 35+ years ago from the library and the note I made back then is now lost. I too still use 2400 in heavy loads in a 45 Colt/Ruger, but never again in an 06 as something was going on in there that ruined the chamber fa...

Re: Ringed chamber

Just to throw something else into the mix. My dad and I both used reduced loads in his 1917 Enfield. He used 20 grains of Unique with 100 and 110 grain bullets. I used 29 grains of 2400 with the same bullets per Phil Sharpe's Complete Reloading book. With no filler I got a ring about 1/2 way down th...

Re: Best 30-40 dies for match grade loads

I do not like over working the brass either. On a die like that I might try lapping it with a shop built adjustable lap. If you lap .006 to .007 out of it you might take all the chamfer or radius out in the transition from the shoulder to the neck. A piece brass with a 45 degree angle applied to tha...

Re: Interesting failure NRA-UK report

Would have ruined my day and probably give me the willies anytime I started pulling on a trigger for a long time after that.

Re: Interesting failure NRA-UK report

Butlersrangers, that Swiss blowup kind of messes with my theory. It would be interesting to see a high speed video of each of the blow ups. After the high pressure event they are not coming apart as I would have expected.<br />Just a couple of notes on the US Krag I just rebarreled:<br />The bolt di...

Re: Interesting failure NRA-UK report

Looking at both fotos of the blown up guns I am wondering if the threaded ring did not fail first. Maybe the relatively soft barrel swelled splitting the ring and as the barrel moved forward after the ring split, the extractor pulled the rim till the rim/case failed. The American Krag is not particu...

Re: Krag Spring Compression Weights

If one assumed they used round bar stock to make the cocking piece you would need the same size bar for both styles. The reduced diameter one would have taken more cycle time to remove the extra material and the same thing with the knurling. I have been a production machinist for 40 years and never ...

Re: Krag Spring Compression Weights

<r><br />It took an hour or so to modify the cocking piece with a surface grinder with a spin fixture and a tool room lathe. I only gained .02 lbs or 1/3 of an ounce. It may take a competitive shooter to notice the difference, and he could get a little bit more weight savings by eliminating the remn...

Re: Krag Spring Compression Weights

<r> I see that others have been pursuing higher spring tensions maybe to decrease lock times? I was thinking of cutting off the knob to reduce the speed time on my Krag sporter that I am working on. That would have been a bad idea. The threads are less than 1/2 long and only in the knob area. The at...
