New to Krags

Post by JohanM »

I just received my first Krag. An 1897 Steyr ...serial number 354 and according to Boer War rifle expert Ron Bester it is very probable Boer Krag. Unfortunately sporterized ....but very well done and excellent bore. It also has Boer (Afrikaner) name carved in stock. I am a South African and collect Boer War rifles....that is why I ended up buying this rifle even though sporterized. Rare opportunity to buy a Boer Krag.
I will post pictures. It has an interesting old Lyman peep sight very nicely attached to back of bolt release.

JohanM: Welcome to the KCA forum. It will be interesting to see pictures of your (Steyr) Boer Krag and its Lyman sight.

I use to have a Boer model 1896 Mauser, which must have spent time in Britian and received British Proofs. I sold it, expecting to find a nicer one. I missed out when my friend sold his with a beautiful floral design, the name 'Piet Foche', and a birthdate, carved in the stock. We didn't know how rare Boer rifles would become!

I've never gotten to handle a Boer Krag.
