1915 Danish Krag find.

Post by zacha6579 »

Ok so, first off new to the forum so hello all, secondly, I have half of a danish krag. Lol
I found this at a junk shop, all numbers matching for what I have pictured, I believe anyway.
Problem is I don't know what to do with it or what it would be worth with what I have. I have thought about parting it out, I have also thought about fixing it but that's a bit of an investment.
So basically, any info I can get on this would be cool, as well as a ball park figure on the value of what I have.
Numrich offered me a whopping $60, and a local gun shop said it was basically junk.
Also if this is in the wrong place on the board feel free to scold me and move it to the proper place.

Welcome to the forum, brother. The smarter guys will be along in a bit.

Well think about it. Why would Nummrich give you nothing for it? Because they know they could make money off of it. I am an anti-parts-stripper guy but who deserves the money more, you or them? Somebody already made off with the stock and side gate parts. So how much is a barreled receiver worth to someone into that family of rifles? I advise you to sit on it until you do a lot more research as to what you can get for it in a good trade with someone who would/could use it.

But it is your rifle and your decision.

You could always hang it on the wall as part of a "This is too cool" display.

Well see that's what I was kind of thinking I'm not gonna just get rid of it to get rid of it, and like you, I don't like parting things out. Especially something like this, the way I look at it, someone somewhere in this family of rifles is looking for a numbers matching set up like this even if they have to get the gate parts off of another rifle.
And I always prefer trade anyway. Lol.
What I thought was funny about numrich was they had everything I have minus the barrel and calculated up the way they have it broke down there is 900$ worth of parts according to what numrich is asking for what they have in stock, and that was with no barrel.
So I'm like you pay 60$ so you can make 900$ bite me. Lol

'zacha6579' - Welcome to the KCA forum.
What you have are the rough remains of a model 1889 Danish Infantry rifle. Danish Krag, #90944, was built in 1915, at the Haerens Tojhus (Army Arsenal).

Your metal appears to have been either 'plated' or the finish is completely stripped. This was not 'officially' done.
It greatly diminishes the desirability of the parts that are left.

IMHO - Your most valuable part is the barrel, but only if the bore looks decent and shootable. A usable barrel might be of interest to someone restoring a Danish Krag that has a very poor or damaged bore. The barrel 'jacket' could also be of great use to a restorer.

Returning this Krag to a functioning state would be very expensive. Danish stocks and barrel bands do not show up often in the 'used' parts market.
You are missing a lot of parts. The bare or plated metal also complicates having an attractive outcome.

I don't like being a 'Debbie Downer', but your rifle parts are not currently a very attractive display item.
Also, it is awkward to sell 'interstate', because the 1915 dated action is considered a Firearm and is supposed to go through an FFL (dealer).

FWIW - I don't think the Numrich offer of $60 is off base.

And another welcome to the KCA.
I bought a barreled receiver with some parts from Whig for a little more than the $60 you have been offered. My purpose was to have a receiver on hand when questions were asked on the forum. I can go get mine out of the toolbox (big toolbox) and check things out to answer questions. It had a bunch of aluminum paint on it that a did a fair hob of stripping with automotive brake fluid.
You could always hang on to it and be our Danish Krag go to guy.

I'd take the $60 and save yourself a lot of frustration about how to sell it. I don't think it is worth much more. Needs a ton of work to restore it well and you still have to sell it. Take the $60 and build a Krag fund. I just bought a good condition complete and matching Danish Krag with a moderately pitted bore I plan to sell as a shooter. I would hope to get around $800 for it. I don't like stripping rifles for parts. I like Numrich and have bought a ton of parts from them over the years at fair prices.

WTB: Danish Krag barrel

I'm looking for a full length barrel for my Danish Krag rifle. I plan is to use this rifle for the CMP Vintage Rifle Match which is being held in our area, so, the barrel must be in excellent condition for match shooting.

Hey!

I gotta say, I'm honestly quite surprised with the offerings of 60 dollars for this, that seems off base in my opinion. Of course, it's a rusty parts build but from what I've heard there are VERY few of these Danish rifles stateside, and complete rifles go for the thousands. Obviously I may be off on American pricing, but I'm just judging on the rarity of it in my experience visiting the states. But I mean, even in Canada, where I'm from, a regular Danish 1889 in rough condition will go for 2K CDN, and carbines for 2.5K-3K at the least.

Honestly, I see the Numrich offer as a rip-off if you consider what they sell spare Danish Krag parts for in general. They want someone to pay 105 bucks for a bolt body alone. Heck, for a partial cocking piece they want 57 dollars. Just for a barrel jacket they want to sell it for 200. https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufa ... anish-krag

I'd say hold on to your rifle and restore it to its original condition, or sell it to someone who would be willing to restore it to its original condition as well. Don't part it out, there are few parts matching rifles as it is. I'd expect at the very least 100 bucks or a bit more for the parts kit since it'd take some effort to put together into a complete rifle. I know I would.I mean hell, if you're willing to ship to an importer in the States for importation to Canada I'd take the thing.

Of course, if I'm wrong on the pricing then let me know where I can find these Krags! ;)
