Info on stomperud krag

Post by Nomad15 »

Hello, this is my first post on this site, I was referred her from another gun forum.
I am trying to find as much information about stomperud krags as possible.
I have the Krag book written in Norwegian but sadly do not speak Norwegian.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
On a side note, I am looking to buy a stomperud, if anyone has a good source it would be helpful. It seems I waited too long and you don’t see many come up for sale anymore.
Thanks for any help
John

Nomad15 / aka John - Welcome to the KCA Forum!

Not my area of expertise, but some members know a lot about the 'occupation' Norwegian Krag rifles.

I know that 'Private August Stomperud, #91' was based on a Swedish cartoon character, (kind of like 'Beetle Bailey').
The Kongsberg Armory workers became extremely inefficient, when making rifles for their Nazi Occupiers.
The bastard Krag rifle configuration, with its war finish, was given a comic nickname to communicate Norwegian contempt.

If you use the 'search feature' of this forum and use terms like Stomperud, Norwegian occupation, or Nazi Krag,
you will probably see old threads that are interesting about these Krag rifles.

Thanks for the welcome Butlersrangers
I appreciate the info you gave me.
I’m trying to gather as much info on these rifles as possible before I purchase one.
I’m switching from German weapons to Norwegian. It was much easier to research German weapons than their counterparts from Norway.
Thanks again John

'Nomad15' - FYI:

William Brophy's book, "The Krag Rifle", has a very useful chapter on Norwegian Krag rifles and carbines, written by Sigurd Halverson.
There is also some good content in a chapter on Danish Krags.

Franklin Mallory's book, "The Krag Rifle Story", Also has good content on the Scandinavian Krags, written by Ludwig Olson.
There is also content on Krag-Jorgensen prototype & trial rifles, authored by Karl Egil Hanevik.

These two books are out of print and used copies are expensive. They remain very interesting and useful Krag reference books.

Hi!

The Kongsberg Weapons History Association (Kongsberg Våpenhistoriske Forening) has a website that details a bunch of things Kongsberg produced throughout it's lifetime, and has some informational sections on the different models of Norwegian Krags that are in Norwegian and English (just right click and click "translate" when you're on the webpage to translate the text).

Here's a couple links to pages on the site, one is for german production rifles, and the other is for stomperuds specifically.
https://kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Rifle&weaponid=RIF0200
https://kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Rifle&weaponid=RIF0265

Some of the information is pulled from Hanevik's Norwegian book, but its a useful website to use.

Thanks Butlersrangers and Skillest for the help. I will try to get the 2 Krag books that you mentioned, it will help since they are in English.
I checked out the 2 web sites and they are very helpful.
With all the fake German markings out there and all the different variations of Krag rifles I want to have a good grasp of what would be correct when I find something.
Thanks John

'Nomad15' - FYI

A small 'swastika marking' will be found on the barrels of many Norwegian Krags.
This has nothing to do with the Nazi occupation of Norway and the swastika legs are the reverse of Nazi Germany's symbol.

This marking was used by a Norwegian barrel steel supplier (or inspector) and predates National Socialism by decades.

Attached are two photos, (the 1st one courtesy of KCA member - 'Parashooter'), that show this Norwegian marking.

Thanks for that information, I thought I heard some reference to that briefly in a movie but never actually saw it. Thank you for bringing this to light.
If I cannot find a stomperud rifle I am going to try an find a Norwegian rifle from just before Ww2 so I will have to learn the appropriate markings
Thanks John
