'96 krag to '98 krag action

Post by todd444 »

i recently bought a '96 krag sporter stock at an auction. i have two '98 krag actions(sans bolt) but i don't have any '96 krag. is it possible to do a '96 krag stock to a '98 krag action?

Not sure on the answer to the question, but I do have a couple of new old stock bolts from when we were doing our bolt research. Both have been measured and we can give you that information, one has been thoroughly cleaned and the other still has the 1903 preservative on it.
Same price as when purchased from Grandpa's.

Todd,

You ask an important question for your project. The M1898 Krag stock and the M1896 Krag stock are different in one major way.

The M1898 Krag receiver was changed for the bolt handle where the ramp was removed. If you examine the M1896 stock where the chamfer is cut away where the bolt handle sits when closed, called the bolt handle seat, this chamfer cut out is changed with the M1898 receiver such that the cut-out is squared.

Therefore, the M1898 receiver with the bolt ramp removed will fit in the M1896 stock but the reverse will not work.

The picture below shows the M1896 chamfer cut out for the bolt ramp.
