this was giving to me by my late pappy. the rifle has passed thru great grandfather, grandfather, dad, late uncle and mine hands(also my sons). my great grandfather bought the rifle sporterized. the stock was black from age and i thought that citristrip could take that off. well, it did.......sort of. i decided on 320 grit sandpaper but 320 grit wasn't what i needed, i needed 220 grit to take off the black linseed oil. i used 2/3 of a sheets of 220 grit. the black gunk left on the sandpaper was worthless. i then did a steel bristle on the sandpaper every few seconds. (sand for few seconds, then bristle the sandpaper, sand for a few seconds......) i got most of the black linseed oil off of the stock(5 hours) and then i started the 320 grit. then 400 grit AND then bartley wood dark filler. when that is done, then its back to the 400 grit. then i'll 4 ought steel wool it and THEN i'll do minwax antique oil. after 3 or 4 coats, then i'll let it sit for 3 or 4 weeks......and THEN it's 2 coats johnson's paste wax.

Just curious- I cannot tell from the pictures above- Was that an unmolested Krag carbine stock that you sanded down or was it already a damaged, cut-down rifle stock?

I hope that it was not a good carbine stock that could have been placed on a real Krag carbine.

I'm sure it will look good refinished, though. Wonderful to have a family treasure as you have shared with us!

Look at the comb nose to notice it's already a serious molestation victim, regardless of original configuration.

its a 1903 rifle that has been refinished to a 21 7/8" barrel(30" barrel) and it has a cut-down stock. the only thing i've done to it (minus the stock sanding) is i put on a redfield 102k aperture sight.
