A well sighted Krag doesn't always wipe the 'smirk' off a face!

I sense a certain resistance to considering the suggestions made, from pressures to space for loading. Should the loading concept offer you a chance to begin accumulating ammo, I found Winchester 30/40 brass from this source: https://www.powdervalleyinc.com/. Subsequently, a local shop offered three 50 case bags for $27.00 each. I grabbed them. He was so excited by the concept that he ordered in some more. I grabbed those up as well. It turns out several of the other old geezers in town have Krags. I now need to find powder and might settle on 180 grain RN bullets if they become available.

Since our correspondent is attached to a conversion of caliber, the only question I might ask of the gathered Krag folks is this : could it be rechambered for .30 M1 or 30/30 ? I am thinking the pressures might be nearer to 30/40, though I suspect there would be a lack of compatibility with the magazine requirements. I loaded a bunch of 30/40 with 110 gr. RN (thanks for that idea BR). Those rounds shoot well and I have an affection for single shot shooting. I was a muzzle-loader shooter for many years. Relaxed slow fire. Whatta way to go.

Maybe we should stay on topic! If we feel the need to talk about another topic we could start a new thread. The OP hasn't posted since page one on Monday. It could be that he didn't get the answers/support he was looking for regarding conversion to .303 (thankfully because while it seems close enough on paper it is potentialy dangerous) and no other over the counter cartridges could be suggested that fit the bill. Maybe it was because he was badgered about reloading (which is often the best solution and the one that may of us have chosen successfully) when he clearly stated the it was not an option in his present situation. Or it could be that the thread has turned in to about a page and a half of jibberish unrelated to cartridge conversion.

When someone asks a question and is given good answers and advice by several patient people, but, states the intention to go a route that most of us believe is risky, the thread is destined to 'head south'.

IMHO, No one was disrespectful or badgering.

Experience has shown that many 'sportered' (cut-down Krag rifles) have rather nice bores. It is a shame to toss a barrel without testing it. We are in "tough to get ammo times".

I'm sorry to have contributed to the "gibberish". (Sometimes the only reward on a forum subject is the banter and joking. There was no intent to ridicule or offend, anyone).

FWIW - I recall having seen an article about a Krag altered to .30-30 Winchester in one of my gun books. (Of course, I can't find it, now).
I'm sure it required alterations to the magazine (some type of 'spacer') and extractor, in order to successfully feed the shorter & smaller round.

Frank Mallory wrote in "The Krag Rifle Story" about alternative "chamberings" done by Sedgely and others, but, of course some of these were 'wildcats' or obsolete calibers, requiring reloading.

I only pushed reloading as it was really the only solution in reducing ammunition costs, and not having enough room is such a common misconception in reloading, I try to push reloading as it is a very rewarding hobby in both reduced shooting costs and a enjoyable past time. I may be the exception but I find reloading just as enjoyable as shooting, I have now loaded around 20 thousand rounds on my single stage RCBS given to me by my grandfather at age 12 and I'm only 26!

Sorry Ned, no offense was intended. Thought of a couple of things that were not recommended:
#1 Wait it out
#2 Talk Culpepper into selling some of his buried stash. Maybe someone else has excess they will never need.

At least 2 of the reloading ideas did involve equipment that would not involve dedicated space on a reloading bench. I took it space was more of an issue that skill.

The impression that I got about reloading was 3 people in a one bedroom appartment would be too much chaos. I believe he said he inherated a reloading set up. He just wants to be able to buy ammo and go shoot for now. I thought 30/30 at first but it seems mods are necessary to the bolt face for the smaller rim. There just don't seem to be any good conversions to common cartridges to be had. That is not what he wanted to hear but that seems to be the bottom line.

I wonder if reloading clubs exist? I bought a bunch of cast bullets from a fellow that got together with pals do casting in mass. Maybe some ranges have room set aside for that?
