New To Me Sporter Norwegian

Hey there everyone. picked up a new Krag, from what I can tell, it is a Norwegian carbine that has been cut down. It now is set up for a kind of Mannlicher style I am guessing? The front nose cap seems to be the old nose/bayonet band that was cut down and shaped to fit the front. The barrel is down to 20" which... I think the original ones were 24" What to see what you all thought, anything I should look for or check out? I own a 30-40, so I thought this 6.5 would be pretty sweet! Might be fun to play with a sporter.

Not sure what else was changed on it. Sights are matching, I am not sure if it is the original stock cut down, or a new one. I know its missing a band, and the front was modified... as far as I can tell. Happy to get a education :D

Lovely piece of wood!

Hard to tell from the pictures, but if it's an altered M1912 carbine stock there should be evidence of fillers or wood plugs near the stock toe where the holes for the original sling eye and cross-screw were located. Image below gives dimensions of these two parts. A similar filler/plug appears on forestock where cross-screw for lower band once lived. Red circles on first image indicate probable locations of fillers, if any.
Nose cap appears to be altered from original 1912 upper band. Front sight is aftermarket ramp.

'TheFlynn001' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

Your 'altered' Norwegian Krag, as you surmise, definitely was once a Model 1912 Carbine.

The serial number, 23355, is in a 'block' of Karabin M1912 rifles, built in 1923, and your rear-sight is the type used on the M1912.

You have a nice looking 'sporter', that should be a pleasure to shoot. The metal looks great! How is the bore condition?

I would guess the Mannlicher stock was fashioned from your rifle's original military stock. (There is possibly a serial number stamped in the stock's barrel channel)?

The pistol-grip is pretty distinctive on the Norwegian Krag military stocks. The forearm had to be drastically 'thinned' to remove the 'finger-grooves from both sides.

There should be evidence on the top of your barrel of what was once a small screw location. This screw served as a 'post' to support the sight leaf, when it was folded forward.
There are 'Battle-Sight' range graduations on the back of the leaf.

Thanks for the replies! I got some more pictures. It does look like it is the original stock, but altered, a lot form the look of it!

Here is the first spot, that looks to be the plug on the fore end.

And this is the plug on the butt of the stock just south of the pistol grip.

I found another interesting little bit of what looks to be brass on the underside of the stock near the trigger guard. No idea what this is!

As for the bore. I thought she shot pretty good, I was getting around 1 inch groups at 50 yards. Though I kept pulling… need to get used to the trigger. Normal new gun break in stuff. But here is a picture as best as I could take it.

And here is one of the ol “bullet test” not sure if that really works, but it didn’t hurt to take the picture haha.

I tried to get the stock off, everything came loose… but the nose cap screw is really… well screwed up haha. I am happy to say I didn’t do it either!

So do you all think that it has some life left in it? I wonder if there is some way to mount a short scope on it. I wouldnt do that with my US Krag still in military dress, but this rifle has already been changed, so why not right?

'TheFlynn01' - S&K may make a 'no-drill' receiver mount that can work on the Norwegian action.

Williams use to make an ugly off-set mount that required drilling and tapping, as well as, a special adapter.

I am not aware of anyone making a long-eye relief "Scout-Mount", that uses the barrel rear-sight base. But this would be a good way to go.

Possibly, such a critter could be improvised from one of the ubiquitous aluminum one-piece bases that accept Weaver-Rings?

Attached are some pictures of Swedish Mausers with various commercial 'scout' bases. Something along this line might work.

(p.s. - The only way to know if a barrel has 'life' is by shooting it).

The S&K Norwegian Mount may be hard to find right now and sells for about $120.

It requires some wood removal for the band that encircles the barrel/chamber.

hmmm interesting, that S&K mount would be really fun to mess around with, at least to keep from drilling and tapping if I can help it, and I find the side mounted scopes kind of charming.

Though I wonder if it will fit, it seems to have that big front ring that will fit over the receiver, Will that go over the Iron sight post? It seems the holder for the ladder sight is forged or fixed onto the barrel. Have you tried using one at all?

Anyone else have any info on these mounts?

Also, that is a lovely looking Swede there!

I have no direct experience with the S&K mounts or 'Scout' mounts.

It appears the S&K scope-mount, made for 'Norwegian Krag' rifles, has a 'split-ring', that encircles the front of the receiver.
This probably allows the 'ring' to be maneuvered over the barrel sights and into position, prior to being 'clamped' tightly into place.

I am posting some KCA pictures by administrators, Ned and Tom Butts.

Tom was successful in improvising a 'scout base' to fit and 'lock into' the rear-sight base of his Danish Krag. This allowed the use of a centrally located long eye-relief Scope.

Ned Butts has the experience of mounting and using an S&K scope-mount on a US Krag.

You may want to contact these gentlemen directly with questions, via the KCA 'Personal Message' tool, or start a new thread on (Norwegian) Krag scope-mounts, to catch more attention.

(Personally, I would first explore the 'Scout-Scope' route. It avoids having the scope off-set, as well as problems with ejection and Safety-Lever interference.
With a more compact mount and low rings, it would be quick and allow a natural 'cheek-weld' with the stock's comb).

Thank you for all the info, I will see what I can do with it. I emailed the S&K Folks and they said that the side mounted scope will not fit onto a Norwegian Krag carbine. They think that the fixed iron sight mount will get in the way of it. Though it looks like it might work, but... I figure I might as well trust the folks who made it haha
