Handguard Modification

Post by Cat Man »

When great Uncle Bob made a deer rifle out of his old Krag, if he removed the rear sight he often discarded the handguard.

But better gunsmiths that worked more toward finer custom rifle work often added a few more refinements.

This is an interesting modification to keep the standard Krag handguard after discarding the rear service sight. A walnut block is added into the sight opening
and then checkering applied the length of the handguard. It makes the added wood impossible to see. A neat way to keep the matching handguard.

The photo is a good before and after comparison.

Uncle Bob was no Bubba, that was nicely done.

If one wanted the handguard to be unmolested using walnut scrap to build one from scratch while putting the original away would be a good plan. CarbonOutlaw did a nice one from a table leg.
