Odd Behavior

Post by butlersrangers »

One engages in odd behavior, when deprived of the KCA Forum for extended periods, during a "pandemic".

I've taken up with strange rifles and loading exotic calibers in my basement.

I never thought I'd be reloading 6.5X50mm Arisaka!

A few years ago, I bought a Type 38 carbine from my wife's widowed Aunt. It was her husband's WW-2 'bring-back', for which the Aunt's immediate family had no interest. (I just wanted to keep the 'heirloom' in the extended family).

Well, you know how it is when you have a firearm .... you want to shoot it!

Factory loaded ammo was 'silly expensive'.
It was far cheaper to buy some nice 6.5 Arisaka 'semi-rimmed' Prvi Brass from Graff's. (I already had 6.5mm projectiles, primers & powder. I simply used a 6.5X55mm 'neck-sizing' Die to make rounds, that would work).

BTW - The 6.5X50mm is a great little cartridge and fun to shoot. The Type 38 carbine is strong and has some neat virtues. However, the bolt ergonomics are rough. It ain't no Krag!

You thing the bolt is not the best? You should see my son shoot my Type 99 Arisaka Left handed!!! It's mesmerizing the way he reaches accross the action with his left hand to cycle the bolt! And he does it like a pro too!

I am enjoying shooting the 6.5 mm Arisaka short rifle. The chrome-plated bore, with Metford style rifling, is sure a cinch to clean!

When I got home from the Range, I ordered (200) RN 139 grain PPU projectiles from Graf's for a trial.

The coarse barleycorn front-sight blade has to be 'buried' to the bottom of the rear-sight "V" and bullets still strike 6 to 7 inches above the point of aim.
Windage is fairly 'ON' at 50 yards.

For Range Shooting, I am considering replacing the Issue sight-blade with a nice tall Swedish-Mauser blade.

If I remove 4 pounds of 'pull-weight' off of the trigger, I just know my shot groups will shrink by 1/2!

Are you sure that's a 140-grain bullet in the photo? (Looks like 160.) I can't recall ever meeting a 140 round-nose 6.5 anywhere - but am eager to become enlightened.

'Parashooter': It's an Old Stock Bullet & seated out pretty far - I was shooting a 140 grain Hornady RN projectile, that is no longer made.

I weighed several of the projectiles and they run real close to 140 grains 'on the button'.

A friend gave me the partial box of bullets. It came from a 'deceased' Reloader's supplies.

Attached are a couple photos of the Hornady box:

Thank you! I've learned something new (or old).
