bought 'nother mauser

Post by todd444 »

i bought a sporterized Brazilian model 1908 in 7 mauser(i'll check on that). its serial # is B 74** SS. i paid around 2 Ben Franklin's for it. halfway up the barrel, i can see pits(1 - 1 1/2" wide) but not enuff to fret about. the barrel seems clean and sharp and the trigger pulls around 8 - 10 lbs(2 stage) cleanly. i still have to clean it and i'll probably sand, wood filler, sand somemore and minwax antique oil the stock. i'm on the fence for d&t for scope mounts, i like the crest. the trigger has to go, i'll probably replace it with a dayton or timney.

i have too many rifle projects to do. i guess she has to go into safe and take a number.

Is the barrel full length? If so, it is worthy of restoration.

I don't think it is hard to find original m-1908 Brazilian stocks & handguards. (Argentine m-1909 wood will also work).

Mausers usually have a pretty nice 2-stage trigger. Maybe cleaning and lubrication will help. Let-off should be about 3 1/2 pounds on 2nd stage.

The Brazilian rifles usually appear to have received hard use!

you are probably right on cleaning!!!!!! not measuring it, but i think its a 24" barrel. i have a b square rear sight scope mount on the way. i think a vortex 2-7 IER scope will be good enuff. i don't want to d&t for a scope mount.

Hi todd444,

Have fun and good luck restoring your 1908 Brazilian Mauser.

BR is correct...most 1908 Brazilian Mausers have seen some hard service in the jungles of Brazil.

Mine was no exception, it was a rusty wall hanger when I purchased it. However, it was my third project MILSURP and I was determined to see it through.

It actually turned out fairly nice and I was able to purchase a repo sling, original muzzle cover and bayonet for it.

Unfortunately the barrel bore was a sewer pipe and my 7mm rounds went all over the place except where I aimed. I even had a keyhole from time to time.

I purchased a replacement barrel for it but never got around to swapping them out.

Once again enjoy you new Mauser

right now, i am soaking the bore and action with g96 triple gun oil and i'll do a gunslick's foaming bore cleaner. i did take apart the bolt and cleaned it. the inside of bolt (spring, firing pin, etc...)was surprisingly clean.

i have two sporter 93 spanish mausers and i will rebarrel them. the one is my youngest son's rifle. it should have been a douglas barrel in 7x57, but the 6.5x55 small ring barrel (white) came up for sale and i told my son about it and he said buy it!!!! so i did. its on the way too. the other 93 i shot, and thats all. i didn't hit 3' x 3' target at 50 yards. at 25 yards it did, sort of. 1/2 went into the target and 1/2 didn't. the 1/2 that did hit the target were keyholes-like too.
