Thank you to all Veterans.

I thanked my sons tonight. One is a veteran of the Air Force. Another serving in the Army since 2007. (Yes, I'm a proud and bragging Dad.)

My folks called tonight and let me know that an uncle of mine is giving me the campaign medals my great grandfather received from serving in the Army for the Filipino Insurrection and the Boxer Rebellion (the one that carried a U.S. Model 1898 Magazine Rifle). I am honored. This great grandfather also served during The Great War, but did not make it to Europe.

The only WWI veteran I knowingly met was the village barber who cut my hair (crew cut) in the 60's. He was born in 1897. I have found the unit he served in through a Wisconsin veteran website. He was in an ammunition supply train. I have found a newspaper article where he was listed for "shell-shock". I assume that he was in a transportation vehicle taking munitions to the front lines. Presently, I am researching history of his unit and documenting it for his descendants. His name was Donald Livingston of Livingston, WI. He had the shell of a hand grenade on the mantel at his barber shop. I remember it being more spherical than the modern day (at that time) grenades shown in WWII movies. Now that I know he was in a munitions unit I understand how he may have grabbed it as a souvenir. He was a kind man and was always complimentary to a boy not yet in his teens.
