"Smithy" - ARRRRRRGH!!!

Post by Parashooter »

It happened again, right here on the web's best forum. Somebody used "smithy" as a nickname/diminutive for "[gun]smith" - and I can't just let it go again!

Folks, a smithy is the place where a smith works, a forge. Today it seems the confusion is so rampant that some recent dictionaries are even listing "smith" as an alternate definition of "smithy" - aaarrrrrrrrghhhh!

Please don't torture me further. When all else fails, remember the first stanza of Longfellow's poem and picture the "smith, a mighty man" working at his forge ("smithy") under a spreading tree -
Under a spreading chestnut-tree
The village smithy stands;
The smith, a mighty man is he,
With large and sinewy hands,
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
Here endeth the lesson. :roll:
Go and sin no more! :twisted:

It is mighty hard to find a real Gunsmith or actual Gun Shop these days.

Parashooter,
Hope you did not mind me making up the verb tense of Dremel. :-) Seemed to fit the picture of Bubba destroying Krags. Sixty years ago, my dad had a Dremel that was a more professional looking tool with an electric cord, much different than the battery powered made in China gizmos they sell today.

I'm lucky. There have been a few gun shops open up in my area. There is one 5 miles northeast of me. Another 15 miles south of me complete with indoor shooting range and a gunsmith. And I have an FFL dealer over the hill from me well within walking distance. Just bought a black gun from him this last Winter.

Village Blacksmiths have had to become much more creative these days to make ends meet.

Nothing like a steak tenderized with a hammer/anvil and cooked over an open forge.
