The 'bridge' would complete the barrel-band and might also serve as a sight base or scope-block?
I like the term "bridge" for the top connecting piece.
Possible reasons to have the bridge:
1. scope mount
2. experimental quick break down
3. mirror mount for remote control in trenches (I saw a device on TV for the 1903 Springfield)
4. remember that device for target device that poked holes in a card?
5. cannot even imagine what it was for

I looked for a picture of a Conetrol cap to show how the dovetail "bridge/cap" worked, I cannot find one. I toured the factory 40 years ago when I was looking for a job. So I am the only one earth that knows how it works that has not bought one. :-)

The only thing I can add to this is that, whatever it is, there is a reason behind EVERY "internal" contour - on a piece like this nothing is "surplus" or "decorative." So, any solution must make use of every machined facet other than the perimeter itself.
