help with reloading

Post by indy650 »

hey guys sorry for the newbie questions I'm new to reloading. Obviously powder is about impossible to find but my uncle has some Accurate brand 2460 powder will this work for 30-40 Krag or is it too fast burning?

AA2460 has a burning rate appropriate for most medium-weight bullets in the .30/40 Krag. Figures below are QuickLOAD software estimates, not load data, and indicate that a 36-grain charge with a 180-grain jacketed bullet might be a reasonable, conservative maximum. This tracks well with Accurate's data for the similar-capacity .303 British, shown below QL estimates, which lists 36.5 as a starting load.

Cartridge : .30-40 Krag
Bullet : .308, 180, Sierra SPRN 2170
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.714 inch or 68.94 mm
Barrel Length : 30.0 inch or 762.0 mm
Powder : Accurate 2460

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 1.25% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

If this is a maximum load, I would start at 10% below it.

I started at 30 grains with the Accurate 2460 and am getting around 2000 fps with 168 gr bullets. I only plan on target shooting and possibly hunting under 100 yards so I think I might just stick with this load. Thanks for the help guys this forum is full of great people.
