'Donki' - Seating short .30 caliber bullets

Post by butlersrangers »

'Donki1967' asked a question, in another thread, about the Seating Die I use to seat 110 grain RN bullets in .30-40 Krag.

I simply use a regular RCBS Bullet Seating Die.

My cases are 'Neck-Sized' about 2/3 the length of the case-neck and have a slight flair at the 'mouth'.
(I use a Lee 7.5mm Swiss 'Collet' Case Sizing-Die, which knocks out the fired primer and only sizes the case-neck. It also leaves a slight flair at the case mouth).

I save a .30-40 cartridge, that is loaded with the 110 grain RN projectile, as a 'gauge'.

When I am loading the .30-40 'reduced loads'. I 'back-off' the Seating-Die and the adjusting-stem.
I put my 'gauge cartridge' in the Press shell-holder and raise the Ram. I carefully screw-in the Seating-Die and Bullet Seating-Stem, until the stem just touches the projectile.

Next, I seat a bullet into a case charged with powder and measure the completed round. I fine tune the seating-stem until overall length is correct.

This works for me. I hope it is Helpful.

I've made a dummy 30-40 round with a 7,5 MAS seating die, it works fine with a 110 gr RN 308 bullet.Occasionally I also made a cartridge of 30-06 with the same bullet.
The Vihtavuori reloading book gives data for this last caliber. No idea what it can give in an M1917 or M1903 ! :?:

'Donki' - I hope the 110 grain RN .30 caliber projectiles shoot accurately in your rifles.
