Hi Everyone, Tis is my first post to the group. Excited to be here, I love my Krag!

I have enjoyed shooting my 1898 krag open sight for many years, but with my eye failing I am thinking of putting a scope on it so i can continue using it. I am wondering about this website and if anyone knows if they are still operating, and if anyone on here has used these rails before?

The Krag house mounts are a good product with several using them. They had 2 styles a regular 2 screw that uses the tapped holes normally used by the rear sight. A 3 screw model would use the same 2 with an additional hole needed to be drilled and tapped. The 3 screw one would be more secure but needs the extra hole which will affect the resale value on a collector piece. Drilling the hole with a hand drill would be a mistake to even try with the risk of the hole not being centered and the possibility of drilling too deep and ruining the barrel.
The scope used on a Krag with these bases will need to be long eye relief, but they have the advantage of not being in the way of the ejected case. Overall affect is the scout rifle look. A couple of the members here have them and are quite happy with them.

Hi Riskee... Welcome

I have a Kraghaus rail on my sporter which I set up as a cast bullet rig. Works very well! I have the long rail, and I was extremely careful in drilling and tapping that third screw hole.

Sorry I did not see that you were a brand new member. So, a late Welcome!

Even if you do not have the skills that Paul does to drill that 3rd hole I would get the 3 hole mount. Some day you could drop it off at a gunsmith's place or have a machinist do it while you wait. I think it is legal to have a machinist do it as long as it is not dropped off. There is a local gun plumber here that has all the skills and training of a gunsmith sometimes brings stuff over to machine, since he has no machine tools yet.

Depending on your use a small red dot could be the answer to shooting. Maybe not precise enough for target shooting but good for a lot of purposes. I was having a little trouble getting mine as precise as i wanted and later found out the problem I was having was flares caused by my cataracts. But fast on target at reasonable ranges they are hard to beat. They do let you keep both eyes open and you see things you never have seen before when shooting pests or game. Never saw the pink mist or pieces of an armadillo flying after the shot till I used mine.
