I noticed this Krag model 1896 bolt for sale on eBay.

It is probably a good example of a Krag Bolt with a 'crack' developing in the lug area.

IMO - It gives a helpful idea of where and what to look for.

That's where they crack. I learned that the hard way, via Ken Walter's Pet Loads.

'DR' - Please explain more regarding your experience and mishap!

We have always known it is possible for Krag bolt to crack, but we sure do not see or hear of many. The mention of these 2 is all I recall. DR is yours still in your possession?

Is the one Ebay priced as if it is broken? Or a premium because it is so rare?

Fred - It is listed as a "good used vintage bolt" and has received some bids.

I have sent the 'Seller' a note, cautioning about the apparent defect and a photo indicating the apparent flaw.

You could tell him a member here will give him $5.00 for it to have in his Krag drawer for reference. This member goes by FredC.

FredC - The 'Seller' politely replied to my caution. He inspected his bolt, and found the unnoticed 'crack'. The item has been removed from eBay.

I used the Ken Waters "Recommended Pet Load" of 42.0 grains of IMR 4350 and a 220-grain (probably Sierra) bullet, which we now know is way too hot. Cracked the lug on my 1896 Bannerman sporter on the 3rd shot. I've had the rifle since 1962, bought it in a Chinese pawn shop on Queen Street in Honolulu. Still have it. Still shoot it, but it now has a new bolt. Bannerman probably put it together from parts. It works fine, even shoots accurately. That's odd, because the chamber is at a very slight angle with the bore. Maybe a WW1-surplus machine gun barrel.

FredC - I can no longer communicate with the eBay vendor, who owns the faulty bolt, due to eBay 'policing' of communication attempts.
(I tried and was blocked).

Once an auction is closed, you can no longer reply or ask a question per eBay rules. BUT, if the seller has any other items for sale, you CAN reply or ask a question using one of the current listed items. I’ve often done that and asked about an auction that was pulled or didn’t sell and wasn’t relisted.
