'Jonz' - Welcome to the KCA Forum and
Good Job with your photographs!

Your U.S. model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen rifle, #121189, was assembled at Springfield Armory around August, 1898. The barrel was originally 30 inches long. Someone shortened the barrel (and stock forearm) and installed a 1903 Springfield front-sight. This was likely done to make the arm handier for hunting. It was likely done after the Krag was sold to the public.

The wood and metal of your cut-down Krag appears refinished. Your rear-sight is the model 1901 rifle rear-sight.

Your Krag is one of the small percentage whose serial number was found in surviving official documents. Springfield Research Services data (SRS), compiled largely by Frank Mallory, reports Krag #121189 was a model 1898 rifle issued in 1899 to Co. D. 3rd Kentucky Vol. Infantry.

You have an interesting Krag. Unfortunately, its value has been diminished by unofficial changes ('cut-down') and refinishing.

You still have a nice looking Krag for shooting and hunting.

Thank you for the info and history on this rifle. It's been hard to find someone that has had any real knowledge on it. Not really looking to sell but would you have any idea what it's value might be? Thanks again.

'Jonz' - There is not a lot of demand for U.S. Krag rifles and carbines that have been cut-down and modified for Hunting.

Most people, who seek or collect Krags, want them in original military configuration and finish. Yours is refinished and has the stock and barrel shortened.

IMHO - Your Krag is worth around $300. This is based on its utility and parts value.

(If it is an inherited "Family Heirloom", from a beloved relative, it could be beyond price in your family).
