Need bayonet for Krag 1898 made 1903

Post by Krag415626 »

I have m1898 Springfield krag sn#415626- stock is in good original condition. However, the forend was shortened many years ago exactly 15/16 of an inch to accommodate a longer bayonet grip handle. Were these rifles modified by soldiers to hold different bayonets? Any recommendations? Please help - thanks in advance!

By soldiers? Unlikely but not outside the realm of possibility. By others? More than likely.

Got a picture or two of the end with and without the bayonet band installed? Can you get a picture of the stock end without the barrelled action in place?

The smarter guys will be along in a bit.

'Krag415626' - Welcome to the KCA Forum.

FWIW - I can not envision this being any type of authorized alteration. It sounds like some kind of strange Bubba work.

Pictures would be interesting.

(A 1917 U.S. Enfield bayonet would be worth a try, to see if that was what someone was trying to use. But, with a 30 inch Krag barrel and 17" Enfield blade, that would be quite unwieldy! Hey, maybe a Movie Studio prop rifle for an "Arisaka").
