Curved buttplate

Post by Tom Butts »

I was just wondering if anyone knew the reasoning behind adding the curve at the bottom of the buttplate of the 1896 rifle and carbine. I have looked a bit in Mallory and Brophy and, while they mention that a new buttplate design was used for the Model 1896, I didn't find a reason for the curve. Just curious.

During regulation drill when the rifle is snapped to attention at the soldiers side, reports were received that the toe of the stock was being damaged when contacting the ground. The modification of increasing the thickness of the buttplate and rounding the toe, minus the trap door for the jointed cleaning rods, first appears on late production Model 1892 Rifles at about serial number 19,000.

I have just such a butt-plate on 20197. Thanks for the info - don't believe those were made for a very long run; I've never seen another - but then, I'm out here in CA.
