Early Comments On Better Sights - 1896

Post by Knute1 »

Another critique of the Krag rifle sights and the need for something better. From an 1896 issue of "Journal of the Military Service Institute of the U.S." The article is titled "The New Infantry Rifle" starting on page 488 and ending on 495. I have posted similar articles, but I don't believe this one was posted. It can be downloaded as a pdf to get around better.

Here is an excerpt commenting on accurate firing during the American Revolution:
Is accurate shooting a thing to be shunned in a military
rifle ? It is said that King George's hired Hessians laughed at
the rifles of their opponents, requiring as they did so much time
in loading and firing. But the rifles of our forefathers were so
accurate and true shooting, and the men who held them were so skillful in their use, that few of those Hessians returned to
Europe to tell the story of our independence.
