Krag 1899 Oiler and Cleaning Rods

I have a a 1899 Model Krag, as per the receiver.

In the the buttstock there is the three cleaning rods. It also has an oiler. But to put the oiler in you have to remove the buttplate. Seems odd.

Is that the way it is supposed to be?

Yes, that is the way it is supposed to be. Can you put up some pictures so we can give you more info about your rifle/carbine? Inquiring minds want to know.

I can post photos but I better harden my resolve first.

I imagine it to be perfect, but after review it might be called a Frankenkrag or a Kragenstein.

No worries. Many of us have sporterized Krags and we don't begrudge anybody else who does. The fact that yours has a Model 1899 receiver makes it interesting right there. We can tell you what you have and what you don't have. So don't hold back none.

You're teasing us. Need a full length photo of both sides and front sight. Your handguard appears to be for a carbine. Very interesting. I'm in training and not an expert. Others will join in. But full length photos will give us more to go on. Thanks

Holy smokes. Looks like you have a U.S. Model 1899 Carbine. Not a sporter. I sure hope others get on your post here and give you good sound advice. Is your cartouche visible at all on the left side between the wrist and receiver? If there is any drawback, the gun may have been refinished. She's still a beauty. I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers. The barrel should be 22" from the muzzle to the face of the bolt.

The barrel is 22" long. The muzzle is in the right diameter range.

The stock has been sanded so no acceptance stamp. The stock also had additional sling swivels which have been plugged and refinished.

There have been some refinishing, but it looks like slow rust bluing not cold bluing.

Very nice looking gun, definitely a legitimate carbine! But, I do not believe that you should have to remove the buttplate to access the oiler. You do have to remove the rods, and, the oiler should definitely have been put in small end first so as the allow the maximum wiggle room for the rods. Are you sure you have a Krag oiler?
