1899 label on Krag tool-box

Post by butlersrangers »

A gentleman ('srculpper') posted a photo of a very neat box on the Milsurps Forum, that once held an Armorer's field kit for the U. S. Krag.

I took the liberty of copying and enhancing the picture of the label inside the lid. It contains a lot of useful information.

Here's a glimpse of a similar 1908 period box for the 1903 Springfield rifle.

Thank you for this great post.

I have been researching the two kits. Mallory listed in his Krag Book the tools that go in the Krag kit. Many appear to be the same as the M1903 Company Tool Box. I believe the corners on the Krag kit were dovetailed, while the M1903 kits were finger jointed. It also appears that Krag boxes were recycled into M1903 boxes. But further research is needed. In addition the drifts for the two kits are the same but the numbers stamped on the drifts are different. Does anyone have a Krag kits? If so can you post some photos?
