That is because that is your stacking swivel. Used to stack arms when in camp.

'Myron' - I am guessing you have a copy of the U.S. model 1907 sling?

'03collector' is quite correct about the Krag 'stacking-swivel' being intended for the stacking of arms.
(This is also true of the 1903 Springfield, 1917 Enfield and M1 Garand rifles).

However, in the early 1900's, the merits of a shooting sling for position-shooting, were just being realized.
Competitors improvised and began using the issue (62 to 66 inch long) model 1887 sling as a 'shooting-support' and not just as a carry-strap.
(A few years later, the model 1907 sling would be purposely designed to serve as a shooting-sling, using the middle-swivel on various U.S. service rifles. The 1907 sling also was a practical and quickly adjustable 'carry-strap').

Getting shooting-support, with a model 1887 sling, required threading the very long sling through the 'middle-swivel' and anchoring the 'button-end' of the sling to the 'stacking-swivel'.
This was not an official thing, but an improvisation with the 1887 sling, that kind of worked!

Possibly original and reproduction 1887 slings are a bit slimmer than your sling?
I was able to attach a reproduction model 1887 sling to the front 'stacking-swivel', in the improvised fashion of the early 1900's match-shooters, without any alteration to the leather.

If you do have a model 1907 sling and need installation instructions, we can post something for you.

I shoot my Krag competitively, along with my 1903 and Garand... and I use a Turner reproduction 1907 Sling on everything except the Garand (which I use a 1960's era web sling). The 1907 sling is absolutely period correct for a Krag after the turn of the century. They are easy to install and use, and you can google sling installation for the correct method. The 1907 sling is not used with the stacking swivel like the 1887 sling would have been.

By the way, Turner slings are about as close to original as you can get in terms of an accurate reproduction... especially since he makes the with the original equipment that he acquired from the Rock Island Arsenal!
