Good info.

Makes me wonder if the one built in 1903 got lonely. :-)

One model 1899 carbine, being manufactured in Fiscal Year - July 1902 to June 30, 1903, is a bit of an attention getter.
In viewing this subject, it is important to view the receiver and know for sure, that the "MODEL 1899" marking is 1899, and not 1898 overstruck with a 9.

Frank Mallory listed two model 1899 carbines in "KRS"(2nd edition), that could have possibly been assembled in FY-1902-1903, but we don't know if the 'model 1899' was an overstruck 1898.
#420457 - 99C (8/1/43) WW-2 Donation to USN (listed in SRS tables).
#420810 - 99C - Highest Observed 1899 (listed in table Appendix 19, page 248)

Back in June 2017 on the Jouster Forum, 5MadFarmers wrote about his auction purchase, model 1899 carbine, s/n 420813, (Not an overstrike).
This carbine was likely assembled around November 1902, (Fiscal Year - ending June 30, 1903).
As I recall at the time, Mr. Farmer speculated this might be the one model 1899 carbine, that was the "4th Block".

Maybe FY-1903 wasn't totally lonely:

A while back, I watched a 'Hickok45' U-tube Video, in which he was shooting a nice-looking model 1899 carbine.
Close-up views showed a very correct carbine, marked Model 1899 - #420551, no overstrike on the 1899. This could qualify for FY-1903.

A while back, Whig treated us to the auction offering of a Model 1899 carbine presented to General Frederick Dent Grant, s/n 429596, no overstrike on the 1899.
Being a presentation piece, maybe this Krag carbine is totally irrelevant, for Ordnance Department purposes? (But it exists and seems to be from FY-1903)!

I realize my attempts to use reported ranges of Krag serial numbers to group and get a 'handle' on the approximate time period, when various carbine models were assembled, may be foolish and deluded.

I welcome the observations and insights of other KCA members.

BR's first reply in this string said:

'Knute' gave you a likely 'total production number for model 1896 U.S. carbines. (22,058 sounds realistic).
I doubt it is possible to know the number of model 1896 carbines, that have survived.

Maybe you meant "King Carp" from the previous reply instead of "Knute". I was (am) confused, but I was wondering where I came in the mix. The only thing I could think of was the table I attached here from a post I had in 2018. If you add the number of carbines built up to fiscal year ending 6/30/1898 from this table, the number is 22,063. Anyway, the table is reposted for further discussion. So, through some convoluted procession of events we got to this point and I am glad to have contributed to the discussion. ;)

Here is the post from 2018:

Thanks 'King Carp' and 'Knute' for your regular involvement and contributions to the KCA Forum.
I'm sorry I got confused about giving credit.
My eyes start swimming and I get downright dyslexic, when dealing with Fiscal Year, Calendar Year, serial numbers, and likely dates.

You guys dig up a lot of good stuff - Thanks again!
