1899 Krag Safety Lever Install

I have a 1898 Krag made in mid 1899. Problem is the Safety Lever seems to be 1892-1894 and it was broken when I acquired my Krag some years ago. The Spring Spindle which makes the Safety Lever lock into position is broken missing the top knob part that slides in the groove. It caused the Krag to jam in open position. At the base of the Lever Thumb-Piece there is a tiny screw that once removed the broken Spring Spindle and Spring come right out. (See Attached Photo and Diagram) So after always searching I finally found and acquired the correct and original Safety Lever for my 1899 Krag.

My problem is the Spring Spindle and Spring are already installed in the Safety Lever from the factory where is cannot be removed. So installing this Safety lever is the problem. Pushing the Spring Spindle in while installing the Lever where it can lock back in place.

Is there any other way on installing it? I cannot find any way on how to install it.

Took about 45 minutes and three jabs into my fingers using two jeweler flat head screw drivers and one slightly larger one, I heard that joyful snap as it went it place and is working fine!! Kinda figured there was no other way than to play around pushing the spindle upward and getting it to stay in place as I push the lever all the way in. What a pain in arss, but its done and working fine!!!

Some 'civilian' must have drilled & improvised a spindle to adapt your early safety-lever, to (sort of) work with a model 1896/1898 bolt sleeve.

In reality, the early safety-lever used no spindle and was just retained by a cross-screw through the bolt-sleeve. That is why the model 1892 safety-lever shaft has a cross-groove.
The early safety-lever was prone to break during hard use.

Model 1896 and 1898 safety-levers were manufactured with the spring-loaded spindle captured into place. (This sub-assembly was not intended to be taken apart).

It is easiest to install the 1896/1898 safety-lever with the bolt-sleeve assembled onto the bolt. (The Bolt in the rifle and closed, and the rifle held in a rest. This will free both hands).
The safety-lever shaft is inserted into the bolt-sleeve, with the lever pointing 'up' to the 12 0'clock position. (half-way between off & on).

(Note - There is a slight bevel on the inside-rear edge of the bolt-sleeve. This is to assist removing the safety, by allowing the spindle to compress and incline out of its groove).

Installing the safety-lever is a bit harder.

The rounded tip of the spindle has to be compressed into the safety-lever in order to clear the high square-edge, at the rear of the bolt-sleeve.
This allows the safety to move forward and the spindle to snap into its groove.
The 'install' is aided by compressing the spindle with a small jeweler's screwdriver, while pushing the safety forward or lightly tapping on the rear of the safety-lever with a plastic mallet.
It is a tricky dexterity thing!

Thank You!!!! You are spot on with your post!! I was closely examining the proper Safety Lever for my Krag and also saw that slight bevel at 12 o'clock that you spoke of. Figure it was there for a purpose so I did install the new one at that position and as hard as it was to install its was still easier at that position as you mentioned. As with the old lever I did have a friend that suggested the same, that it was drilled and tapped by a previous owner and made to stay in place as being a safety off position. I've had this Krag for about 3 years and always tried to find more info on them and also the proper safety lever. Not much out there about them, though found the Army Manual and a few other things on it. I finally stumbled over a site called Popperts Gun Parts and they had a few of the Safety Levers for sale. https://poppertsgunparts.com/ My Krag now seems to be all there for the correct year now that the safety has been replaced with a proper version. Also will say I do love shooting it. At 100 yards so far she is spot one (iron sites) I wont bastardrize her mounting a scope. When I did get it the stock was dried out with a cracked hand guard. Searching for a replacement I bought one at a gun show (unfinished the kind that use to be sold by S&S but the guy long past away that made them) but by mistake its made for the carbine. I should take photos and sell it here for someone who might need one. I still haven't found a replacement hand guard, but always looking. The stock has since been carefully cleaned (NOT SANDED NO STEEL WOOL) and rehydrated with proper wood treatments so it has come back to its original beauty. How life takes some odd twists, when I bought it, it came with a nearly perfect bayonet. As it turned out the bayonet matched perfect for my 1903 Springfield. And about a month later while helping a lady clean out a basement she had some early 1960's hunting shotguns from her late husband, but I spotted this pristine1898 bayonet with the proper scabbard and close inspection it was original! I asked her while biting my lip if she would sell it. Well she said, how about $85!!! I couldn't get the bills out fast enough.

Also found a guy in NH that does re-loads of the older 1800s firearms, so I acquired the re-load dies and 4-5 times a year I ship him the dies, brass, primers etc and he does the reloads for me (way, way cheaper than buying new rounds) along with 45-70 rounds for my Trap Door Carbine. When reloads are ready I take a 3 hr road trip spend a wonderful day at his place, pick up my reloads, we also shoot on his own 100 yard range. We make it a fun day overall. (Should note I reside up State NY and this socialist State recently banned mailing ammo.).

'RickM' - Your 'new' Krag safety-lever looks good on your rifle. I'm glad you figured it out, installed it, and have it working properly.

Someone in the past tried to be resourceful and make an obsolete part work. Obviously, it didn't work too well!

I checked it out; I've heard of them but had never been a customer. Their prices are good.
I ordered some small parts from them today, that I needed for projects.

It is always nice to have several good parts suppliers. Ebay is getting really 'sucky' as a source!

That is a neat relationship you have with your New England 're-loader' friend.

Nice pictures of you in action with your Krag rifle.

You should do an experiment and post your results on the KCA - "Fire" your rifle with and without the bayonet and document how it changes 'the point of impact'.

I think your replica hand-guard may have been made for the U.S. model 1892 Krag rifle. The 1892 hand-guard was shorter and exposed much of the Krag receiver ring.
The hand-guard was lengthened on later model Krags, so a hot receiver did not burn the hand of soldiers carrying the rifle at "trail arms".
