Really Ugly Krag Parade Rifle

Post by Whig »

This is one of those things you can't "unsee"! I'm considering buying it to strip the stock and refinish it just to take it out of its misery! Oh, my!

"Whig", you need to get some black & white saddle-shoes to match!

That rifle would be a standout for shooting Bowling-Pins.

(Are you feeling lucky? Oh, take the plunge .... there really could be a hidden treasure under that chalky white pigment)!

I agree. I have seen more than one example of stripped painted stocks with beautiful cartouches and stampings underneath. I'm bidding but not real high!

Some more black spots and it could be part of the Dalmation Brigade.

Whig, that barreled receiver I got from you cleaned up pretty good with brake fluid used as a paint remover (it had aluminum paint). Some of those commercial paint removers are known to kill people, others may be corrosive and cause rust. As far as i know brake fluid is not too bad and does not cause rust. I have no idea what brake fluid will do to wood. I am guessing you already have a plan for that.

Is it wrong to only see parts in that image — man, I really could use those hand guard clips. If you know of where I can get Krag hand guard clips, please let me know. All the major part vendors do not have them. I am reshaping K98 clips as a work around.

Whig's "auction find" could be used 'as is', with Winter Camo, at snowy range sessions.

If it's a good shooter, he would probably get a bunch of copycat followers!

Sean - I had a thought on handguard 'clips'.
Go to a Bike Shop and buy a pair of old fashioned "Bicycle Clips".
These spring steel clips 'snap' around the cyclist's ankles to keep the pants from getting caught in the chain.

They could be bent to a tighter radius, cut, ground, shaped and drilled, to make useful spring-clips.
Dimensions do not have to be precise on width and length.

BTW - S&S Firearms had an original Krag handguard cut for the 1901 rear-sight, yesterday, for $100.

I bought matching new wood walnut hand guards — need clips.

I like the bicycle clip idea — also hoping the K98 clips can work too.
