Not sure what this guy is totally talking about from the Georgia National Guard in October, 1894. There may be some other writings elsewhere that may make things more obvious.

It appears, Captain Kivan believed the Krag sling, being anchored to a butt-swivel, instead of at the front of the trigger-guard, would pose problems with 'the manual of arms' and the wearing of a pack or haversack, (for extra socks and underwear).
How in 'Heaven's Name' are you going to carry a Rice Shelter-Half and a slung Krag?
