SRS request please 1898 Model springfield Armory

Post by rjc324 »

Have had this wonderful rifle for years, property of my great uncle who served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. The serial number is 179757, the SFA stamp has the year 1899 on the stock. I don't believe this is an actual carbine, but perhaps is a sporterized version based on the crude front sight and the stock chopped off just in front of the front sling attachment. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

rjc324: Your 1898 Krag does appear to be a cut-down rifle. I believe serial #179757 was built in February 1899.

Thanks for the confirmation. I believe that this was one of 8 rifles brought to Northern NY in the 20's as part of the civilian marksmanship training program.
