Mag cut off

I went to try in my mag cut off into my 1898 but it seems the shaft is about a 1/4 " too long. Is this from an earlier model? Should I just cut it off or is a hard to find part? My Krag has a Redfield rear sight so I don't really need it but wanted to have the option of restoring back to original configuration later.
