Can someone tell me if serial number 288295 is for a Krag rifle or carbine.

No, you cannot tell from the number, but that is WELL after they started marking carbines "Model 1899", so, THAT will tell you, infallibly. If it is marked "Model 1898" it was originally a rifle - if "Model 1899" it was a carbine.
