Muzzle recrowning
Muzzle recrowning
My M1898 rifle has several what appear to be hammer marks, slight flat spots on the muzzle crown. I shoot it. Does this affect accuracy, can it be recrowned, and does recrowning adversely affect value to where it may not be worth it? thx for thoughts.

Hi John,
The one factor missing is how does it shoot now?

John:
The only purpose for a crown is to recess the very last edge of the rifling and give it some protection while the rifle is traveling down life's bumpy road. That very last edge of the rifling is the last thing the bullet feels as it heads down range. If your rifle is shooting well the crown is doing its job. Don't sweat the dings. We will all have a few by the time we are as old as our Krags.
