Late Krag barrels better?

Sticking in my memory is a recollection of reading years ago that the last Krags, over 400,000 ser. no., had better barrels as Springfield Armory's workmanship improved. This may have been when reading back issues of the American Rifleman from the 1920s, in the Dope Bag when edited by Townsend Whelen. Does anyone have any info on this?
