I just recently took up shooting again, and I was so young when I first started, that I really don't know much about guns, other than safety and operation. My grandfather left me a gun, by way of my father (I was 9 when he passed away), and it has now permanently fallen into my possesion. It is for sure a Krag. I would like to know as much about it, but I am having a hard time finding out exactly what it is. Maybe you guys can help.
Side of gun reads: US Model 1898 Springfield Armory. 193792
Barrel is approx 23 inches from inside end of bolt
Stock only extends about 2 inches from ring, leading me to believe it is a carbine, but it may have been cut down.
SN check on oldguns says it was manufactured in 1899, but does not say if it is a carbine or rifle.
Any info would be appreciated.
TIA

Chris,
You have a cut-down Krag rifle. 193792 isn't listed by SRS, however that number is right in the middle of 5 other '98 rifles issued to Co B 34th Engineer, Ft Benj. Harrison on 07/11/18. But that doesn't mean that your rifle was!
Enjoy it for what it is, and for the fact that you're the third generation in your family to own it.
