Hi--
I've just purchased an 1896 Krag carbine (cut down from a rifle). It's in great shape. The serial number is 80996. Can anyone tell me a little of the history of this? I'm attempting to buy a used copy of Col. Brophy's book that might give a list of serial numbers, but just thought I'd ask in the meantime. Thanks.

serial number check
Re: serial number check
Hello Champ,
Your serial number didn't show up on the list that I have.
Brophy doesn't list serial numbers (unless I missed a chapter) Mallory's book has the list. That is the one you want.

Ned--
Thanks very much for checking this for me. I'm new to Krags. Does a complete list of these serial numbers exist anywhere? Does the Springfield Armory do authentication letters (where shipped to, what it looked like when new, etc.) as Colt does? I'll try to get a copy of the Mallory book. Last time I could even find a copy listed for sale, the price was out of sight. Thanks again.
